Sasquatch 2009 Prediction
January 08, 2009

german mosh pit
How come I am already excited for Sasquatch 2009 NW music festival? Maybe because it’s the highlight of my year. It combines all my favorite things: live music, camping, and almost all my friends (if only I could convince Kris and Megan to come). Here is my prediction for 2009’s line up. I’m basing this off of rumors, upcoming northwestern bands, Sasquatch veterans, artists with new albums, and my hopefuls. Some of these are very hopeful, but I can dream right? (You owe me ten imaginary Sasquatch dollars per right guess, fifty if it’s on the right day and one hundred for a headliner.)

SATURDAY
Bands: Kings of Leon, Cat Power, Plush Gun, Michael Franti & Spearhead, The Thermals, Cadence Weapon, The Ting Tings, Fourth of July, Mystery Jets, Devotchka, Fleet Foxes, Loney Dear, Foals, Los Campesinos! and Throw Me the Statue.
Headliners: Of Montreal, Rage Against the Machine

SUNDAY
Bands: Blue Scholars, Ben Lee, The National, Animal Collective, The Black Keys, MGMT, Sufjan Stevens, The Kills, Say Hi, Blitzen Trapper, Rodrigo Y Gabriela, The Kooks, The Dodos, Danielson, and M83.
Headliners: Oasis, Weezer

MONDAY
Bands: Truckasaurus, Ra Ra Riot, Natalie Portman’s Shaved Head, Sun Kil Moon, Decemberists, Cool Kids, Telekinesis!, Frightened Rabbit, Ghostland Observatory, Pepper, The Helio Sequence, Menomena, Kay Kay & His Weathered Underground, Bears, and Santogold.
Headliners: The Flaming Lips, Radiohead

Last year they announced the line up on February 11th through 25th, so we’ll see how I do. You better be going!

New Year’s Resolutions
January 02, 2009

Happy New Year

HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I’m sure no one really cares what my resolutions are. This is for my reference. I have never once accomplished any New Year’s appointed resolution. Hopefully this year will be different. I have had this immense worry lately that I will never amount to anything. Many panic attacks have been derived from it. I feel like this year is when I really need to try and do whatever it is I am trying to do. Blah, blah, blah…

Happy Space Year 1
1. Actually finish a script this year. Get to a final draft, have people read it, copyright it, mail it around, find an agent, etc.

Lisa Frank Is The Shit
2. Start printing my shirt designs this year. And wear them.

Happy Space Year 2

3. Don’t get fat this year. A night of drinking is another ten pounds.

Happy Space Year 3

4. Progress musically this year. The Jellyfish Bandits are doing well, but they could use a lot of improvement on my end. I also need to get over my stage fright.

Happy Space Year 4

5. Make an illustrated novel this year. Even though I draw the world’s ugliest females.

THE END

My 12 Most Anticipated Films of 2009
December 23, 2008

I don’t know how I will make it a whole year with out a Charlie Kaufman or Michel Gondry film, but I’m sure these 12 films will help. Not all of them I except to be amazing, they are just the ones I am most curious about.

12. Jennifer’s Body
I actually think this movie might be terrible. As you can see they completely copied Ture Blood’s poster. It has a lame cast with Megan Fox and Adam Brody. The only reason I am interested in this is because Diablo Cody wrote it, and I want to see how she follows up Juno. Besides a teenage zombie dark comedy sounds like something she could do very well.

11. New York, I Love You
New York, I Love you is doing what Paris, Je T’aime did to Paris. A beautiful love story to a city told through 12 five minute shorts filmed by 12 different directors. Natalie Portman and Scarlet Johansson both contribute films along with a whole bunch of foreign directors I don’t recognize.

10. The Fantastic Mr. Fox
Why am I excited for a stop animation kids film based off of Roald Dahl’s book of the same name? Because it’s directed by Wes Anderson (Rushmore), written by Wes Anderson and Noah Baumbach (Squid and the Whale), and animation done by Henry Selick (Nightmare Before Christmas). This would be number one if it weren’t based off of a book I care less about. I am very curious how Anderson and Baumbach’s quirky writing will transfer into a children’s film. Voices include: George Clooney, Cate Blanchett, Bill Murray and Jason Schwartzman.

9. The Limits of Control
I don’t know much about this film besides it’s directed by Jim Jarmusch, who caught my attention after his great film Broken Flowers. He also did the Cigarettes and Coffee shorts, but I haven’t seen those yet. He teams up again with Bill Murray (who’s film choices have been very creditable this last decade) in another road film about a mysterious loner trying to pull off a crime. It also stars Gael García Bernal (The Science of Sleep) and Tilda Swinton (Burn After Reading).

8. Whatever Works
I am a huge Woody Allen fan. I love everything he has made, aside from his early comedies, his 90s comedies, and Scoop. I am also very much in love with his newer direction in films like Cassandra’s Dream and
Vicky Cristina Barcelona. After traveling around through London and Barcelona we are brought back to New York in his new comedy. Larry David (Curb Your Enthusiasm) fills the neurotic New Yorker role that Woody would normally play. The only reason this isn’t higher on my list is because his comedies are very hit or miss.

7. The Imaginarium of Dr. Parnassus
Director Terry Gilliam (Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas) makes a curious film about an 1,000 year old Doctor and his traveling theater who put on a show that let’s the audience choose between a light and joyful show, or a dark and gloom show. Unfortunately during production the film’s star, Heath Ledger, died. Instead of reshooting the film they decided to alter the script around it. They made the Doctor change multiple times through the film similar to the Bob Dylan biopic I’m Not There (which also starred Heath Ledger). To fill in the gaps came Johnny Depp, Jude Law, and Colin Ferrell. I am VERY curious to see this on.

6. Metropia
Between my love for Ingmar Bergman (The Seventh Seal) and the recent Let The Right One In, swedish films have really impressed me. Here is an under the radar unique sci-fi animation film that I’m sure will get more recognition closer to release. I love this sickly realistic animation style. Vincent Gallo and Juliette Lewis are leading the American version’s voice cast. I see awards already for this film. More Metropia pictures.

5. Where the Wild Things Are
My favorite children’s book and director Spike Jonze (Being John Malkovich). What a great combination. The screen captures I have seen show a beautiful palette of sunset lit forests. Unfortunately the testing screening deemed it too dark for a children’s movie so they had to reshoot a lot of scenes delaying the film into 2009. Oh well, I hope they can comprise and still keep it quite dark, that is what appealed to me the most about the film in the first place. Haven’t they learned anything from Batman?

4. Watchmen
I’m not really that big of a superhero movie’s fan, but this one looks like the superhero film. I think this is an obvious choice. It will be amazing.

3. Scott Pilgram vs. The World
I hope this film brings light onto the growing graphic novel market. But I’m very afraid, I can see this being done terribly. I am reassured by the cast, Michael Cera and Mary Elizabeth Winstead, and the fitting director, Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz).

2. Funny People
The third “real” Judd Apatow film (his priors being Knocked Up and The 40 Year Old Virgin). The cast is amazing. Seth Rogen, Jonah Hill, and Jason Schwartzman to name a few. Adam Sandlar is not my favorite, but I’m sure he can shine under Apatow’s writing and directing. I really love a good comedy and I know this will be one. On a side note: I am so mad at this film and Smart People, they have completely cheapened my current screenplay’s name, Lonely People.

1. Paper Heart
This Sundance hopeful is a half documentary, half scripted, film about the real relationship between Michael Cera and Charlyne Yi (Knocked Up). That’s really all I really know, and boy has it sparked my curiosity. Does Michael Cera act in real life like he does in movies? Will this have an amazing soundtrack?

Honorable Mentions:
The Unborn
Inglourious Basterds
The Road

Thread & Paint & Ink & Cloth
December 19, 2008

My shoes are worn to homeless status. My stomach bulges in tight shirts from my high school days. My beginner washing machine skills have had it’s victims. I need some new clothes. I really want to just make some t-shirts.

Here is a shirt I made for Eat Sleep Print:
Purchase shirt at eatsleepprint.com!

Here are some other awesome shirts:

Anyways, these are all on my Christmas list. Just kidding I don’t want any presents, and I’m not getting anyone anything. Merry fucking Christmas.

THE END.

Prints & script
December 15, 2008

This is a very simple and quick post.

1. Prints
I have three prints and a t-shirt available online through Eat Sleep Print.

2. Script
I just finished (like two minutes ago) the first draft of my script. It feels so good. I am going to let it sit for a day or two then start the long task of editing it to perfection.

New Art Drop
December 09, 2008

Here is some new art I have been working on. I am going to borrow my work’s camera tomorrow to take some better quality pictures, but these low-res, bad lighting, unaligned pictures will have to do for now.

Wolves Mate For Life - Aaron Whitaker
WOLVES MATE FOR LIFE! This is one of my favorite pieces. The name is inspired by my favorite band’s (The Born Ruffians) song Foxes Mate For Life. I painted this picture for my lover, so it’s not for sale. However, I am painting something similar to this one.

Forever? - Aaron Whitaker
FOREVER? I am writing a quirky horror film in which, at one point, a group of kids smoke weed and meditate. All the character’s heads transform into this cyclopes pyramid face that is found on the back of a dollar bill. I am only 20 pages into that script, but I am sure it is going to be awesome.

Leftovers, Again? - Aaron Whitaker
LEFTOVERS, AGAIN? I’ve painted this one previously, but it sold before I had a chance to take a picture. So I remade it. The first painting the monster was happy, but now he is sad because he is having leftovers. I also made it more simple this time around. I made the houses only lines and have less details. I am unsure if I like it better. I am going through a very clean minimalist phase I think.

Summer And The Late Afternoon Beasts - Aaron Whitaker
SUMMER AND THE LATE AFTERNOON BEASTS I want to clean up some stuff on this one.

Bat #3 - Aaron Whitaker
BAT NUMBER THREE I love bats, I will always paint them, I am sure of this. Here is my third installment in my infinite Bat series.

8 things that need to change about Christmas
December 07, 2008

So I guess it’s Christmas, the month long holiday.

I have been around 22 of them, and it’s getting a little old. I’m not saying we shouldn’t celebrate it, but maybe we could switch it up a little. Here’s my list:

  • 1. No more songs spoofing 12 days of Christmas, it’s not creative or funny anymore.
  • 2. Santa Clause would be way cooler as a Yeti, flying Loch Ness monsters would be way cooler then red nosed reindeers.

  • 3. No more coca cola polar bears, I get it, they’re so cute and computer animated.
  • 4. More snow in Oregon, less kids.

  • 5. Hollywood, you need to stop trying to make another Christmas classic, you’ll never be able to do it that means you too Vince Vaughn.
  • 6. Jesus was a jew, he couldn’t eat pig, I am all for steak replacing this ham bullshit.

  • 7. No more pop stars singing christmas songs, please Jessica Simpson, I am begging you.
  • 8. More christmas lights, that’s right, I want them everywhere. In big colorful globs.

Alright I’m wasting time. I need to paint something today. I will post it if I finish anything, but it’s going to be shitty iPhone camera.

I wish I had a camera and some cool furniture
December 01, 2008

I really need to invest in a camera. How am I suppose to run a portfolio without one? Of course my cellphone camera is not adequate:

Anyone know a good cheap camera?

I finally saw Let the Right One In, that swedish vampire movie, and I fell in love. The story was just alright, but the settings and colors really did it for me. I love the fresh clean feel. The swedish boy’s light hair and all the beautiful snow settings, it really made the red blood pop off the screen. The stark framing and cinematography was also very pleasing. I am truly sick of shaky fast close ups, like in the new James Bond, I want to feel like an onlooker standing and watching not having a seizure amongst them.

I have been making a lot of progress on my horror film screenplay. Once I finish it, and get it copy written, I will place it up here. So no art for a while, I am pretty absorbed into this. I have found I get the most work done in a room that is really clean, and my room is very clean right now, besides my ceiling high piled laundry basket. Maybe I should invest in some nice furniture? I feel like I could really kick out a script in a room with nice furniture.

Ooooohh, also I need some art on my walls.
